The Corfu International Festival honours the memory and the work of the Corfiot composer Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his death, through a series of events that will take place from October to December 2022.

The events will begin with the 6th Musicological Workshop on Saturday 29 October, at the Manzaros Philharmonic Society, which has the special honour of bearing his name. It is a one-day conference on "Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros: his life, work and era". In this context, distinguished speakers from the Ionian University and the wider academic world will develop issues ranging from specific aspects of Mantzaros' musical activity to the posthumous perception of his personality. Among the speakers are Socrates Anthis, Kostas Zervopoulos, Kostas Kardamis, Gerasimos Martini, Dimitris Brovas, Spyros Rouvas and Maria Dourou. The event will be coordinated by the musicologist Gerasimos Martinis.

Below is the programme of the event:

  • Socrates Anthis (Assistant Professor of the MSc of the Ionian University & Chief Musician of "Mantzaros"): The facts about the death of Mantzaros.
  • Maria Dourou (Lecturer at the TMS of the Ionian University) on "A comparative study of Mantzaros' settings in relation to contemporary composers".
  • Kostas Kardamis (Associate Professor, TMS Ionian University).
  • Kostas Zervopoulos (Doctor of Music Department of the Ionian University & Chief Musician Phil. Korakianas): The use of the fugue technique in "Hymn to Freedom" and other works by Mantzaros.
  • Dimitris Brovas (PhD).
  • Gerasimos Martinis (Lecturer, PhD, MSc, Ionian University & Coordinator of the event): Manzaros-Solomos, through indicative evidence of their correspondence.
  • Spyridon Rouvas (Lecturer of TMET-PAMAK & Senior Principal Musician of FEM).

Nikolaos Halikiopoulos Mantzaros is known to the general public as the composer of the National Anthem. However, apart from this, he was a pioneer in many other areas of music composition, while his work was also very great in the field of music teaching, as many of the later Ionian composers were his students. All of the above could make him a generator not only of Ionian music but of modern Greek music as a whole.
