Michael Guttman Ensemble - where classical music meets tango! A special evening at the Plakada of St. Spyridon is coming at the Corfu International Festival for Wednesday 11 October at 20:00.
Grammy nominee Michael Guttman is a well-known belgian violinist and music director of prominent festivals around the world. As the 1st prize winner of the prestigious ARD international competition in Munich in 2005, Jing Zhao has established herself internationally as one of the most versatile cellists of her generation. Both renowned chamber musicians, Jing and Michael are playing regularly with artists such as Martha Argerich, Elena Bashkirova, Guy Braunstein, Boris Berezovsky, Vadim Repin, Antoine Tamestit, Maxim Vengerov, among others.
Few know that Michael & Jing not only share their love for chamber music, they share a guilty pleasure: their passion for tango music. Guttman’s encounter with legendary "Tango Nuevo" creator and argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, in the late eighties, reinforced his passion for tango music and encouraged him to create the Guttman Tango Ensemble.
For their new program, with this unique combination of violin, cello, double bass, bandoneón and piano, they intend to connect the argentine tango with the European classical music tradition. The Guttman Tango Ensemble’s new proposal offers the curious public a wide variety of tango arrangements from the french tango composer Chloé Pfeiffer, based in different iconic classical pieces ranging from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s "Eine kleine Nachtmusik" (Musiquita Nocturna) up to Gustav Mahler’s "First Symphony" (Hermano Gustavo).
