Ionian Academy

It is the first Greek University of modern times, founded before Greece gained independence.

It was originally created and used as barracks as this point was one of the entrances to the city during the Venetian occupation. In 1841 the University was moved there and since then it has been called Ionian Academy. It housed the faculties of Philosophy, Law and Medicine, while later Polytechnic School, Midwifery and Pharmacology were established. Today the building houses the administrative services of the Ionian University and the amphitheatre is used for various events.
